Management Classes: Manage Your Delegation - Don't Get Off Track
Management have a primary responsibility to accomplish important work assignments through others. Many times a manager falls short of the objective or fails to get the execution needed to produce the desired results. The assignment does not come in on time or is not to standards. The manager may Plan the Project or assignment well. The Action steps are clear, they pick the right people for each Assignment and communicate the assignments properly.
But still, the work falls short and disappointment results. One of the most common and primary reasons for lack of execution results is that the Manager and the Team simply get off track. Sometimes, this may be the result of the belief that the project plan that all is well because the project was put into action...the pressure is off. It can also be the in rush of management work or new tasks that fill the time and attention that was being given to the Project Plan. The original Project you launched is "out-of-site". You are no longer focused on it and things get off track. I like to say "You can't Get Off Track If You Are On Track." On-track means you have constant contact and review of the Status of each project assignment. You maintain a regular, at least daily, mental run-down of your progress. There are Six advantages to staying this close to your Project:
Maintain Focus. You are able to maintain your focus and that of your team or business unit. You keep the project or delegated assignment front of mind.
Uncover Slippage. Your attention to delegation detail allows you to spot any execution slippage. You can take immediate remedial action to get things back on track.
Coaching Opportunities. You are able to uncover valuable coaching opportunities. Your up-close connection to the status of delegated work allows you to spot coaching opportunities.
Raising skill Levels. By coaching you are able to raise the skill and knowledge of your team. You demonstrate intense interest in your employees and their development.
Action Plan Attention. Where you have delegated steps in your Project Action Plan, you keep everyone on the team current and aware of progress.
Valuable Q&A. Your connection to progress and status puts you in a position to answer questions and clarify delegated assignments. This avoids delays and keeps execution momentum strong.
Staying right on track with delegated assignments allows the manager to keep a tight control of keeping the execution of work on track. Things get done faster. People grow and the Manager succeeds.
