Proper facility management training is essential to keep your business running smoothly. Anyone in a management position can benefit from learning the proper skills to coordinate and lead the people working under them. Effective management isn't necessarily easy, but it doesn't have to be very complicated. Follow these five steps and you'll be well on your way.

1. Try to find ways to improve your bottom line. Look to see if proper energy management, such as automated lights, can reduce your costs. Risk-management costs should be evaluated as well. Costs can be significantly cut by improving management skills. Money spent on management training should be considered a good long term investment.

2. Know when to contract out. You should examine your business plan and determine if you are better off hiring your own workers for jobs, or if you are better off outsourcing them, especially for the less technical jobs such as janitorial, security, and any others not relevant to you.

3. Know the legalities. Make sure you and your people are thoroughly familiar with the various codes and laws relevant to your business. This can be environmental laws, building codes, security, etc. Facility management training is especially important here.

4. Have a comprehensive maintenance plan figured out. Determine whether you want your workers to do observation and repairs themselves, or if you want to hire repairmen. You also need to determine what stage is best to repair at for your business, proactive or reactive.

5. Take charge of your relationship with your end-user. Find out how you can shape your business to meet the needs of your customers. This includes determining what the customer wants and what standards you need to meet. Knowing what your customer wants can help you manage your facility in a way that better meets those needs.
