Management Training:
Management Training Programs Are Not an Option
Training for management should not be an option, it should be a necessity. Why would I say this? Most management get promoted to management positions by being good at getting things done themselves. As management we expect them to get things done though other people. The same skills that made someone successful at getting things done does not always translate into skills of getting things done through other people.
What are the skills that management need to excel at? I believe they must be skilled in leading, communicating, planning, organizing, optimizing resources, implementing, and tracking. A good training program will address all of these areas in that all are important to a manager's success.
Even management that have been managing for years can benefit from training. At most companies more is expected every year. In these tough economic times sometimes more is expected with the same or even less resources. We can work harder and work longer hours, but at some point you cannot keep adding more hours to your work week. I believe that we all need balance in our lives to at our best. If you create an imbalance in your life by working longer and longer hours you will burn out. Good executives need to realize this applies to their lives and the lives of the people who work for them. We can demand more and more hours out of our people, but we run the risk of burning out our best people and losing them when we need them most.
Because of this companies need to be willing to invest in improving the skills of the people that work for them. This can be done internally at some organizations, but may require bringing in outside help for others. Make sure that whatever program you choose that the focus is on the basic skills of a manager. These skills again are leading, communicating, planning, organizing, optimizing resources, implementing and tracking. Some programs may focus on one particular area at a time, but at some point all areas need to be addressed.
As with any training, be sure to set some clear goals. Identify results that are expected and when these results are expected. Allow for follow up coaching and support opportunities as a part of the training. Optimize resources available, prioritize, schedule and track results. All participants also must understand that all development is self development. You can provide the best training in the world, but if your management are not committed to self development it will not happen.
People and management can improve for a time on their natural ability, but at some point they need help and training to improve. We see this with athletes all the time. Natural ability can help someone excel at an early age, but without training the people with natural ability will get passed by people with ability that also receive training and work hard at improving. We need to recognize that this applies to management as well. Remember that to be a truly successful company, management training is not an option.
